Two years ago today, a bold judicial move ensured that anybody, everybody, could marry without discrimination from law. And while there have been those who have been resisting our strides in equality, we can celebrate what we have accomplished, as well as look forward to what we have not yet accomplished. And I can only look forward with hope to one day, years from now... pregnancy wedding dresses
One day, years from now, I will be dressed in my best and tears will well up as I see him smile, knowing ... that nothing he could wear could compare with that smile. Still. I won't be wearing white. Because not a damned one of you would believe me if I did.
One day, years from now, I will stand next to the man that I love and I will make a promise, a promise to have and to hold. But only when it's convenient and definitely not in the middle of summer because your body heat under this duvet is insufferable.
One day, years from now, I will dance with my Gran at my wedding. She'll be on in years and I don't have rhythm so it will even out about right. The proposed and the reposed in a pose and heaven knows that if we fall, I'll thank God that I bought her the LifeAlert necklace the year prior. Here Cindy, put some ice on it till the medic gets here.
One day, years from now, I will nervously hold the sterling silver knife and he will steady my hands by gently holding my wrists and together we will slice into an oversized, novelty of a confection. Rich. Chocolate. Like a traditional groom's cake. Two chocolate cakes. Two grooms shoving cake into eachother's faces like a veritable cakealingus. Take it all. Swallow. Bitch. Yeah. Definitely not wearing white.
And all of this, I can thank to the decisions made on one day two years ago. Today marks a kept promise, for myself, for millions of Americans.
The promise of proposal.
The promise that we can share, as equal citizens, the right to love, to have and to hold... that we can share our lives and our journeys together.
That's a hell of a thing.
